Abstract

Theory suggests that gossip could be essential to form reputations that help to establish cooperative relationships and avoid uncooperative people. We investigated gossip in daily life and found that people use gossip to form reputations of others, which influence how people intend to behave. Thus, everyday gossip can facilitate cooperation.
